UPMC is among the world’s largest and most comprehensive centers for robotic surgeries, completing more than 70,000 advanced robotic surgical procedures since the program’s inception. Over 20 UPMC hospitals in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York have active robotic surgery programs. UPMC East is the latest hospital to launch a robotic surgery program.

This program brings innovative surgical technology access to the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh. Since UPMC East opened 10 years ago, there has been an increased demand for surgical services. During this time, both the number of operating rooms and the variety of surgical care provided have expanded.

“We are thrilled to bring this state-of-the-art technology to UPMC East,” says Mark O’Hern, president, UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport. “We are committed to creating access to the highest quality of care for the people in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh.”

The surgical services team held a celebration ceremony to welcome their newest team member, affectionately named “Rosie.” Rosie the robot will lend multiple “hands” to her skilled teammates to create the best outcomes for patients.

Skilled surgeons perform robotic or robot-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System®. With the help of a 3D screen, surgeons use da Vinci to make small cuts and insert tiny surgical instruments and cameras. UPMC East utilizes a dual console system, which allows a second surgeon to assist. This minimally invasive technology is for general surgical, urological, gynecological, thoracic, and colorectal procedures.

Benefits of robotic surgery may include:

  • Smaller incisions and less scarring.
  • Reduced pain.
  • The ability to operate on hard-to-reach areas of the body.
  • The ability to perform complex procedures with improved visualization and dexterity.
