UPMC Outpatient Center | Clairton virtual tour

Marc Cordero, MD, has close ties to the UPMC Outpatient Center on Clairton Boulevard in West Mifflin.

“Growing up in Elizabeth Township, working at UPMC McKeesport, and now also at the UPMC Outpatient Center in West Mifflin, it’s a good feeling working in and bringing care to where you grew up and to the people you’ve known throughout your life,” says Dr. Cordero, a general surgeon.

The facility, which opened two years ago, houses more than 20 specialties under one roof. Services include primary care, heart and vascular, orthopaedics, sports medicine, and women’s health, along with imaging and an outpatient surgery center.

Dr. Cordero says he’s excited that comprehensive medical and surgical care are more convenient for the people in the South Hills

“By expanding medical and surgical offerings in the area and with so many specialties, so close together, we are making it easier for you and your family to get the care you need closer to home and with fewer trips,” says Dr. Cordero, a lifelong South Hulls resident.

“I know most of us would prefer a short drive versus a long one, especially when we’re not feeling well or when we have a sick family member.”

Saul Silver, MD, the center’s medical director, has practiced cardiology in the South Hills for over 35 years.

“These patients have become family,” Dr. Silver says. “In the outpatient center, we have access to all kinds of specialists for advanced care in cardiology. If you have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, we have the experts. If you have a severe mitral valve problem, we have the experts. And if you need a new aortic valve put in with nonsurgical means, we have those experts, too.”

Cardiac testing services at the outpatient center include coronary angiography with a CT scanner (a noninvasive heart catheterization). Services also include calcium scoring, which helps determine if a patient has coronary artery disease. The outpatient center also offers state-of-the-art echocardiography testing.

“In terms of cardiac testing, we have the diagnostic equipment to identify almost any diagnosis,” Dr. Silver says.

State-of-the-Art Surgery Center

What was once a Toys “R” Us is now a world-class medical facility after a complex construction project.

“The building had been closed for a while, so it’s bringing new life back into the community along Route 51,” Dr. Cordero says.

Inside is a high-tech UPMC Surgery Center. There, doctors perform numerous same-day procedures across a variety of specialties ranging from ear, nose, and throat (ENT) to orthopaedics.

Dr. Cordero performs surgeries to help heal wounds, such as diabetic foot wounds, pressure ulcers, and venous wounds. As a general surgeon, Dr. Cordero also provides hernia consultations and performs gallbladder and skin lesion procedures.

Sean Whelan, MD, a colorectal surgeon, also sees patients and conducts outpatient surgery at UPMC Surgery Center. He cares for colon and rectal cancer, precancerous polyps, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Whelan’s surgical specialties include robotic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

The surgery center is home to numerous specialists, so patients can easily access the care they need before and after surgery.

Patients often need imaging, such as x-rays, ultrasounds, CTs, or MRIs before surgery. These services are available in the same building. This coordination also benefits the board-certified surgeons, who can immediately review the images with the on-site radiologic technician and plan their surgical approach for the patient.

Plus, when patients arrive at the outpatient center, there is ample free parking.
