Jamie Uy, MD, is a urologist in the UPMC Department of Urology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed her residency in urology at UPMC. This December, Dr. Uy will start seeing patients at the new UPMC Outpatient Center on Clairton Boulevard, in addition to her office at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.
What Are the Most Common Conditions You Treat?
As a general urologist, Dr. Uy treats older adolescents and adults with a variety of conditions. She says the most common ailments include kidney stones, prostate enlargement, and overactive bladder. Dr. Uy also treats patients with urological cancers, including bladder cancer and prostate cancer.
“With the new UPMC Outpatient Center, we are making urology services easily accessible for those who live and work in the South Hills,” says Dr. Uy.
She notes that patients are often referred to a urologist from their primary care doctor or another specialty provider, but a referral is not required for people who may need to see a urologist for a new or ongoing condition. While some cases are episodic, such as gross hematuria, or blood in the urine, Dr. Uy notes that she monitors other patients long-term for say, kidney stone risk.
What Surgical Procedures Are Performed at the UPMC Surgery Center on Clairton Boulevard?
Along with seeing patients at the new UPMC Outpatient Center, Dr. Uy will also perform procedures in the outpatient surgery center, such as:
- Bladder and prostate biopsies
- Cystoscopies (endoscopy of the bladder)
- Vasectomies
“We see a lot of people come from a fair distance to Pittsburgh to be treated. The convenience of having a specialist in their neighborhood means we can treat and monitor conditions more easily without patients having to go out of their way,” says Dr. Uy, who hopes the new South Hills location will be a convenient destination for patients who want to schedule appointments closer to home.
For patients who may require care or surgery at one of the UPMC hospitals, the new location will also allow for more convenient follow-up appointments.
What Preventive Screenings Do You Recommend?
Dr. Uy suggests that men over 50 or those who are at-risk for prostate cancer be screened for early detection. For women, she advises routine urine testing at your primary care physician’s office, which could detect issues like hematuria.
