Is Peyronie’s Disease Curable?

It’s one of the first questions people ask about this condition: Is Peyronie’s disease curable?

The short answer is no. However, your doctor has a range of treatment options at their disposal that can help you manage the condition.

“At UPMC, you’ll be seen by a board-certified urologist,” said Paul Rusilko, MD, director, UPMC Reconstructive Urology. “And it’s important when discussing treatment options for Peyronie’s disease to be seen by someone who has been educated in all the various treatment options, including non-surgical and surgical options.”

First, let’s take a closer look at the disease. Although doctors don’t fully understand why, this condition causes scar tissue to build up along the shaft, causing the penis to curve. This often happens to men as they age and is seen most frequently in men over 50, but it can affect some younger men as well.

Treating Peyronie’s generally involves reducing scar tissue along the shaft. For a severe curve, surgical interventions are also available to correct the curve and restore function.

Living With Peyronie’s Disease

During the early phase of Peyronie’s, when the curvature first begins, it’s common to feel discomfort during an erection. However, this pain often goes away over time. A mild curve that doesn’t interfere with sexual function may not need any intervention. If the curvature does affect your sex life or it causes feelings of stress and anxiety, you can work with your partner or talk to a therapist about trying different positions that lessen the effect of Peyronie’s disease.

A more severe curve can cause difficulty maintaining an erection or achieving penetration. In these cases, you may want to talk to your doctor about treatment options that can minimize the curve. Early intervention is always the best way to reduce the scar tissue buildup, so talk to your doctor at the first sign of a change in curvature.
