For patients who have sustained a concussion, an important part of their treatment plan is often getting back to work. Their return to this routine helps patients “retrain” their vestibular systems, which helps restore cognitive abilities.

Four ways that getting back to work is a crucial component of a structured concussion treatment plan:

  1. Exposure to noises
  2. Exposure to crowds
  3. Exposure to light
  4. Taking breaks

While the concept of returning to work can sometimes be overwhelming for concussion patients, it is a key aspect of recovery.

Daniel Charek, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, says, “When cleared and asked what was most helpful in getting them healthy, patients often say getting back to work was a crucial component of their structured treatment plan.”
