Overuse in Young Athletes: What Is Little League Elbow? | UPMC

“Little League elbow” can occur when young athletes suffer an overuse injury in their throwing arm.

Common symptoms of Little League elbow include severe pain on the inside of the elbow, loss of motion in the shoulder and elbow, and weakness along the arm.

Volker Musahl, MD, medical director of UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, says treatment for Little League elbow usually starts with rest, but in extreme cases, immobilization of the arm may be required for up to four weeks.

After a period of rest, athletes should start a throwing rehabilitation program to improve range of motion and strength in the arm. Youth athletes who take part in a rehabilitation program are often able to return to their support stronger than ever.
